Map JSON and Tags

Learnable Meta accepts map JSON exported by map-making.app. You normally should not hand-write the location JSON; prepare the locations and tags in map-making.app, then export the file.

Require Pano IDs

Every uploaded location must have a Pano ID. In map-making.app, enable Use Pano ID locations by default before adding locations and fix any existing locations without an ID before exporting.

Coordinates alone are not enough: the Pano ID is how Learnable Meta matches a GeoGuessr round to the correct location.

Tag every location

Each uploaded location must have at least one non-empty tag. A tag connects the location to one Learnable Meta explanation.

Tags can be any internal name, but this format is recommended:

CountryName-Your Meta Name

Examples:

The text before the first hyphen becomes the country name shown by Learnable Meta. A recognized country name also enables its flag. The remainder identifies the meta. Use the exact same spelling everywhere that clue applies.

The tag is an internal identifier; players see the meta’s Name instead. Broader labels such as Latin-UniqueLetters are valid, but they do not produce a country flag.

Multiple metas at one location

A location can have multiple tags when the same panorama contains more than one useful clue. For example:

Learnable Meta stores the panorama once and links it to both metas. The userscript displays a tab for each meta after the player guesses, and switching tabs changes the note, images, and any GeoJSON map area.

Upload modes

The Creator Dashboard offers three location upload modes:

  • Partial upload adds new locations and updates matching locations without removing existing ones. This is the safest default.
  • Tag-based replacement replaces location assignments for the tags present in the upload. Links to other metas on a shared location remain intact.
  • Full replacement replaces all locations in the map group. Existing meta names and descriptions remain, but locations not present in the new file are removed.

Review the selected mode before confirming a replacement upload.

Upload the export

Open the map group in the Creator Dashboard, choose Upload Locations, select the upload mode, and upload the exported JSON file. You can also paste locations copied from map-making.app directly into the open upload dialog.
